While on vacation on Kaua`i, Nicole and husband Joe came across a skinny pit mix roaming the streets of Waimea. Knowing this dog was in need of shelter, Nicole contacted the local humane society who picked up the sweet-natured dog who was soon named Sasha. Nicole and Joe kept thinking of Sasha, even upon return to their Portland home, and regularly checked the shelter for updates. On one update, Nicole learned that Sasha was not going make it to the adoption floor due to age and that she had swollen lymph nodes that may have been “cancerous in origin.” Wanting a second opinion and help bringing Sasha to Portland, Nicole asked KAWS for assistance. We were able to bring Sasha into our program and get another opinion on her condition, which we were told was most likely due to a bug bite and treated with antibiotics. It was also stated that Sasha was 4-5 years old. Once Sasha became a KAWS dog, we were able to make arrangements for her to travel to Nicole and Joe. Sasha is now Koko and thriving in her new Portland home. She has two cat siblings, Tigger and Lucy, and enjoys living in her new cozy home with them. Nicole says, “Koko just wags her tail and wants to play. She’s the sweetest, most kind doggy.” We love seeing Koko living in the comfort of a nurturing home and getting out and about to explore the PNW. Thank you, Nicole and Joe, for advocating for Koko and giving her a most beautiful life!
