Ava’s Story

Ava is a little whippety gal who found herself at the local shelter.  She had obviously led a life without much human contact or creature comforts.  Ava was skinny, the tips of her ears were chewed up from fly bites, and though she was on the timid side, she had a friendliness that shone through.  We knew she would fit right in at Lori’s Whippet Spaw in Portland, OR, and we soon brought this sweet gal into our KAWS program.  While Ava waited to travel to Portland, our friend, Melanie, fostered her and got her more used to life in a home.  After a few weeks, Ava and her travel companion, Anna (Miki) flew to Seattle with our repeat escort, Cecil.  The girls were met in Seattle by Dr. Karen and taken to her Tacoma veterinary clinic, until our friend, Warren, picked them up and delivered them to Lori at the Whippet Spaw.  As we expected, Ava fit right in and soon received many applications from wonderful folks.  We decided Suzanne, Gene, and their former Big Island boy, Kohala, would be the perfect family for Ava.  Suzanne and Gene had been searching for a companion for Kohala who is quite reserved, on the small side, low energy, and was used to being an only fur-child. “We knew it was going to be a challenge to find just the right companion for Kohala,” said Suzanne. “Knowing our tall order, Lori with the Whippet Spaw felt confident Ava was a contender.” Suzanne added. As we had hoped, Ava settled in nicely with Suzanne, Gene and Kohala, who couldn’t wait to give her a brighter future.  Suzanne tells us, “It’s been 6 months and she’s a wonderful addition to our pack. She has helped big brother, Kohala, become more affectionate and social. I’m sure his calm energy has helped her realize this is a home she can trust. She loves being with him and will wedge herself into the couch or even lay partially over him. He wasn’t so sure at first, but nowadays he doesn’t seem to mind. We love watching her blossom as their bond grows. Whippet bliss!”  We wish Ava and her family many years of blissfulness and are delighted they are part of our KAWS family.   Thank you to all our caring friends who came together to make this rescue a successful one!!
